A blocked drain rarely clears itself, and a slow sink or a toilet that rises when flushed is usually the first sign that something further down the line is building up. We start with the simplest method that will work, normally drain rods or a mechanical cleaner for a single blocked appliance, and move up to high-pressure jetting where fat, scale or roots have built up in the underground run. If the blockage turns out to be in a shared sewer beyond your boundary, we will say so, because that is normally the sewerage company's responsibility rather than yours.

CCTV Drain Surveys

A CCTV drain survey puts a camera through the pipework so we can see exactly what is going on underground without digging. We use it to find the cause of a blockage that keeps coming back, to check for cracked or displaced joints, root growth and collapsed sections, and to confirm where a drain actually runs before building work starts. You get a written report with the recorded footage, a plain description of any faults we found and where they are, and a recommendation for what, if anything, needs doing. High-Pressure Water Jetting

Where rodding will not shift a blockage, high-pressure water jetting will. The jetting head is fed down the drain and cuts through fat, grease, scale, silt and small root growth, cleaning the whole pipe rather than punching a hole through the blockage, and the loosened material is flushed on to the sewer. Because the full bore is scoured, the drain stays clear for longer. We use it on domestic drains that have silted up over years, on kitchen waste runs in flats and rented houses, and on commercial kitchens and larger sites where fat build-up is a constant problem. Jetting is also how we prepare a pipe before it is relined.

Drain Repairs and Relining

Once a survey has shown what is wrong, we can repair it. A cracked or root-damaged section can often be fixed from inside the pipe with a patch liner or a full drain reline, which forms a new pipe within the old one with no excavation. Where a drain has collapsed, dropped at a joint or been crushed, we dig down, replace the damaged length and reinstate the ground, paving or drive above it. Older clay pipes are prone to displaced joints where the ground moves with the seasons, and that is a common fault on the clay soils around Dorking. Questions we are asked about drainage

It depends where the blockage is. Drains inside your boundary that serve only your property are yours to maintain. Shared drains, and the lateral drain beyond your boundary, are the sewerage company's responsibility, so if we find the problem is in a shared run we will tell you who to call rather than charge you for work that is not yours to pay for.

We confirm the cost with you before any work starts. A straightforward blocked toilet, sink or gully is quoted once the engineer has seen what is involved, and a CCTV survey or a repair is quoted separately once the camera has shown what is needed. There are no prices on this page because every job is different.

In most cases, yes. A patch liner or a full drain reline is installed from inside the existing pipe through a manhole or access point, so paving, block drives and lawns stay as they are. Excavation is only needed where a pipe has fully collapsed or dropped so far that a liner cannot pass through, and we will show you the survey footage before recommending either route.
