An air source heat pump (ASHP) sits outside the house, draws heat from the outdoor air and moves it into your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water cylinder. It runs on electricity rather than burning fuel, and for every unit of electricity it uses it typically delivers several units of heat. Before we quote we carry out a room by room heat loss calculation, which MCS requires and which tells us the size of unit you need and whether any radiators should be upsized. Heat pumps run at a lower flow temperature than a gas boiler, so getting the radiator sizes and the pipework right matters more than it does on a boiler swap. On installation day we set the outdoor unit on a base or brackets, run the pipework and the new electrical circuit, fit the cylinder and controls, then commission the system and register the MCS certificate. Running Costs and Efficiency
Whether a heat pump cuts your bills depends on the house, not just the unit. A well insulated home with correctly sized radiators and a system set to run at a low flow temperature will do well; a draughty house with small radiators and the flow temperature turned up will not. We tell you which of those you have before you spend anything. Some homes around Ockley, Cranleigh and the villages between them are off the gas grid and heated by oil or LPG. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant towards the cost of replacing a fossil fuel boiler with a heat pump in an eligible home in England or Wales. The installer must be MCS certified, which WTS is, and the grant is claimed by the installer and taken off your quote rather than paid to you afterwards. The eligibility rules and the grant amount have changed more than once since the scheme opened, so we check the current position for your property before we quote rather than repeating a figure here. Before You Book a Heat Pump Survey
The outdoor unit
It needs a spot outside with clear airflow, usually against a wall or on a base in the garden, and pipework run back to the cylinder. We look at this on the survey and check the planning position for your property before we quote.
The hot water cylinder
Almost always, yes. A heat pump does not make hot water on demand like a combi boiler, so if you are coming off a combi we will find a place for a cylinder and price it in.
Radiators
Sometimes. The heat loss calculation tells us which rooms are short of radiator area at a low flow temperature. Often only a few radiators need upsizing; we list each one on the quote.
How long it takes
Usually a few days, depending on where the cylinder goes and how many radiators change. We agree the programme with you before we start and keep hot water off for as short a time as we can.
Handover and servicing
We commission the system, show you the controls, hand over the paperwork and register the MCS certificate. We then offer an annual service to keep the warranty and the efficiency where they should be.
